Green Chemistry's New Champion: Waterborne Epoxy Resins

Waterborne Epoxy Resin is a groundbreaking material at the forefront of sustainable chemistry, revolutionizing the coatings and adhesives industries. Unlike their traditional, solvent-based counterparts, these resins use water as the primary dispersion medium, dramatically reducing volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. This shift not only creates a safer, more pleasant working environment but also aligns with increasingly strict global environmental regulations. The result is a high-performance material that provides excellent adhesion, durability, and chemical resistance without the health and environmental risks associated with harsh solvents.


The unique formulation of Waterborne Epoxy Resin allows it to be used in a wide range of applications, from protective coatings for industrial floors and marine vessels to adhesives for construction and automotive parts. Their low odor and non-flammable nature make them ideal for indoor use in schools, hospitals, and commercial buildings. Recent advancements have also improved their curing speed and film-forming properties, overcoming past challenges and making them a viable, and often superior, alternative to solvent-based systems.

 

A key player driving innovation in this space is BASF. The company has been at the forefront of developing new and sustainable chemical solutions, including a significant focus on water-based technologies. One of their notable recent developments is a new amine-based hardener for epoxy resins, co-developed with Sika. This innovation, commercially available under the brand name Baxxodur® EC 151, is particularly interesting for flooring applications. It enables the creation of ultra-low VOC formulations with up to 90% less VOCs compared to conventional hardeners.


This new hardener not only improves the environmental footprint of the final product but also offers superior performance benefits. It provides excellent flow properties, allowing for easy and even application, and enables a quick and thorough cure over a wide temperature range. This rapid curing reduces project timelines and allows for a faster return-to-service, making it highly efficient for industrial and construction projects. This development underscores BASF's commitment to creating high-performance, sustainable products that meet the evolving needs of the market while contributing to a greener future.
